review - Man Stroke Woman

Man Stroke Woman is one of the many comedies to be promoted from BBC3 to BBC2 and what is has going for it is it has a well known comedy actor who people will have seen before (Nick Frost), it was created by “Ash Atalla” who produced The Office and is a sketch show which appeals to both Men and Woman. Man Stroke Woman is a couple based sketch show centred on every day life (in the office, down the pub, at home, dinner party etc) often with a couple, it takes these everyday situations and usually gives them an unexpected twist just to keep you on your toes.

The show lines up with a 3 man 3 woman formation and it is a mixture of one of sketches and some recurring characters. I believe the show is written through many different sources submitted sketches but instead of this being a benefit it seems to have created a show without direction and if I was being honest I would actually say the writing is not really that good. I found that I found maybe 1 in 5 sketches funny.

The strength of the show is quality of the actors, they really work get the most out of the average sketches. I did find it refreshing to watch a comedy without numerous catch phrases from one dimension characters. A criticism I have of the writing is it feels like they are trying to hard to add in a surreal/unexpected twist to the sketches but often ends up looking as if it is trying to hard and falls flat. It is refreshing to see a sketch show based on couples and there is a lot potential, which makes the show frustrating because when it is good it is very good and the good acting combined good writing delivers real laughs but these are too scarce for me to want to watch this show often.

Some of my favourite sketches are irresponsible uncle (Nick Frost) who is offers his 12 year old nephew a drink and when he says but uncle I’m only 12, says “come on yer poof, drink your beer”. I also liked the man who found his wife featured in a porn mag with 2 other men and all his mates say is, I like the tiling in the bath room. These are amusing sketches with a twist which were quickly delivered and well acted. The type of sketches I didn’t like was a man having a dinner party for his friends (2 couples) and his friends pointing out his wife never seems to be their and him innocently saying yes she is working late with Nick, she had to go on holiday with Nick, I won’t even bother typing the punch line as I imagine you can already see it. One confusing and unfunny sketch was a lazy woman ringing up her friend who was answering phones at the police station, she would then describe a popular fairy tale (Cinderella, Red Riding Hood) the woman would then say wait a minute it’s my house mate. There were quite a few lazy and obvious sketches which dragged the show down.

To summarise I found the show very hit and miss but it could be something you could watch with your girlfriend/boyfriend because you will probably both laugh at completely different bits, almost in a boyfriend versus Girlfriend way. The acting is great but the sketches are a bit weak.

Are you getting enoughing sleep?

Are you getting enough?

This was the provocative title of a BBC news story today that suckered me in to read it and I found out it wasn’t referring to sex but to sleep, which probably effects people more than sex.

its actually quite an interesting article and it has ways to cope with either not being able to get to sleep or coping without much sleep. Personally I read before I go to sleep this makes me feel tired and then when I can’t read any more off to slumber land I go. I have summarized the article for you people in a rush. You can read the whole article here

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7114661.stm

Get tense – tense all the muscles in your body this will help you relax and go to sleep

Play old cd’s – play cd’s you know well, that way you brain doesn’t have to think about what the lyrics are and can focus on relaxing

Saying The – if you can’t get to sleep, repeat the word The The The. This will block out all other thoughts and worries which might be keeping you away.

Power nap – have a 20 minute power nap, which is popular in Japan

The power nap is a controversial subject, some people think it invigorates you, whilst others think it makes you more tired. I find that just closing your eyes can have a benefit.

I bet most people catch up on sleep during the weekend. The article doesn’t mention that but I think I have read somewhere that you can catch up on missed sleep on the weekend

Comedy Review - Californication

A gem hidden away on channel 5. Initially I saw a new comedy was being broadcast on channel 5 and usually I won’t bother to watch it just because of the poor quality of comedy channel 5 usually transmits. I read some good reviews and was intrigued to inspect it. What you need to know about this show is

1. It features David Duchovny from X Files fame
2. It features David Duchovny having lots of sex with good looking women
3. It has nothing to do with the Red Hot Chilli peppers song/album and in fact they are a bit miffed about the title and are currently suing.
4. DD (David Duchovny) is transformed from science fiction nerd to uber cool womanising, drinking writer who has writers block and instead spends most of his time drinking and chasing skirt

The show is about DD as who is a Hank Moody (don’t judge its better than you think) cranky wise cracking novelist who’s book has been made into a cheesy romantic movie which Hank hates. The stories is roughly based around Hank trying to write and also trying to win back his former lover whom he has a 12 year old girl with. The Daughter is usually used in the plot to get Hank to see his former lover and try and wooo her back, unfortunately for Hank she is seeing a boring fellow and so there is no room for Hank in the in.

There is not much on supporting cast, you have Hanks agent who is torn between spanking his secretary and trying to bump start his marriage with his wife. You also have the boring fellows 16 year old daughter who Hank gets it on with and now often has to do her biding to keep her quite.

The description of the show can’t really do it justice because I watch the show and when it ends I am usually a bit disappointed that it has finished so quickly, despite it being 30 minutes long.

I recommend you watch this, David Duchovny is very good and his character is interesting as he goes round wise cracking and insulting people. Not a lot happens in each episode but enough to keep you entertained.

Billie Piper to return to Dr Who

I see that Billie Piper is going back to Doctor who. This is probably a good move for her because she was certainly very good in the doctor who series. Also she has made a bid for freedom, got a bit sexy in her role (see pictures here) of the call girl and did a few other things. Anyway it was a good excuse to have another look at another picture of the sexy Billie Piper. The more she is on our screens the better.

NUTS - THE SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS

http://hoskshalfhour.blogspot.com/

I am fond of a nut but this bloke at work loves them, so I thought I would search on the internet to find some health risk associated with eating lots of nuts and then tell him about it. How wrong can I be. I like the fact they say it lowers cholesterol but no one knows why.

http://www.vegan.org.nz/nuts.php

NUTS - THE SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS

One of the most unexpected nutritional discoveries of the 1990s was that the frequent eating of nuts appears to dramatically improve health1. In particular, nut eating greatly lowers the risk of heart disease2. In 1992 researchers working on the Adventist Health Study at Loma Linda University in California reported that those eating nuts daily had up to 60% fewer heart attacks than those who ate nuts less than once per month3. The beneficial effect of nut consumption was found for men, women, vegetarians, meat-eaters, fatter people, thinner people, the old, the young, those who did much exercise and those who did little exercise. The study was large, comprising 31,000 white Californian Seventh Day Adventists and similar benefits of nut eating were subsequently found for African Americans4. Prior to the publication of these results, nutritional advice had usually been to minimise nut consumption on the grounds that they were a "fatty" food.

Four other large studies have since confirmed the benefits to the heart of nut eating2, 5-8. In addition to the cardiac benefits of consuming nuts, the risks of having a stroke9, of developing type 2 diabetes10, of developing dementia11, of advanced macular degeneration12 and of gallstones 13 have all been found to be lowered by eating nuts. Calculations suggest that daily nut eaters gain an extra five to six years of life free of coronary disease14 and that regular nut eating appears to increase longevity by about 2 years.15.

The more often nuts are eaten the better as the benefits appear to increase as the frequency of nut consumption increases. The risk of fatal coronary disease and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes both appear to decrease steadily as nut consumption increases from less than once a week to once or more per day10, 16.

Just what quantity of nuts should be eaten? The studies above suggest that 30 to 60 grams (1-2oz) of nuts should be consumed daily to gain the maximum benefits seen. Whether even larger amounts confer further benefits is currently unknown.

Nuts are of course a fatty food and many might worry that they will put on weight by eating more nuts. After all, 30 grams (or one ounce) of most nuts contain about 800 kilojoules (200 kilocalories). Happily though, on present evidence, nuts do not seem to cause weight gain1,17. For example in the Nurses' Study the frequent nut consumers were actually a little thinner on average than those who almost never consumed nuts6, and daily supplements of almonds or peanuts for six months resulted in little or no increase in body weight18. Nuts appear to satisfy hunger sufficiently well to appropriately reduce the consumption of other food.

Which nuts are best? The definitive answer to this question is currently unknown. In the Adventist Study about about 32 percent of the nuts eaten were peanuts, 29 percent almonds, 16 percent walnuts, and 23 percent other types. These researchers did not ascertain whether the nuts were fresh, oil-roasted, or dry-roasted. The Nurses' Study found that peanuts, which are legumes, appeared to be just as effective in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease as tree nuts6. Experiments where volunteers were fed nuts as part of their diet for several weeks have found that walnuts19-22, almonds22-25, hazelnuts26, peanuts27, pecans28, pistachio nuts29 and macadamia nuts30 all alter the composition of the blood in ways that would be expected to reduce the risk of coronary disease. Chestnuts, a nut unusually low in fat, do not yet seem to have been studied. The best advice currently is probably to eat a variety of nuts. Walnuts though, because they contain n-3 fatty acids, may be particularly beneficial 31, but this requires further study. Coconuts, on account of their high saturated fat content, should probably be avoided.

It is not completely understood just why nuts are so consistently found to be healthy31. Nuts contain low levels of saturated fats and high levels of unsaturated fats. Consequently, as would be expected, studies have clearly shown that nut consumption lowers blood cholesterol levels. No doubt the lower cholesterol lowers the risk of heart disease.

Interestingly though the cholesterol is lowered by a larger amount than would be expected just from the favourable fatty acid composition of nuts31. However the reason for this is not clear. Nuts though are good sources of fibre, vitamin E, folic acid, copper, magnesium and the amino acid arginine, for each of which there is evidence of a role in preventing heart disease31. Nuts are the best dietary source of manganese and contain plant sterols, the compounds now added to some margarines to reduce cholesterol adsorption from food, and are a good source of boron32.

In New Zealand nuts are not a major part of the diet, most often being eaten in small quantities raw or as peanut butter. However nuts are very palatable and consumption could readily be increased. With a little imagination nuts can easily added to many recipes including home-baked bread, cakes, soups, main dishes, sauces, stuffings, salads and desserts. Waldorf salad, pesto and baklava are internationally well known examples. Thousands of recipes using nuts are readily available on the internet, at for example Epicurious, and RecipeSource. In Australia and New Zealand the peanut-based meat substitutes Nutolene and Nutmeat are manufactured by the Sanitarium food company.

Nut butters too are delicious, particularly peanut, almond, cashew and hazelnut butters. However most commercial peanut butters have saturated fats added to them to prevent oil separation so that it is probably healthier to seek out brands made from peanuts (and salt) only. Unfortunately, virtually all commercial peanut butters have salt added (salt tends to raise blood pressure). Alternatively peanut and other nut butters are easily made at home by roasting, and then grinding, mincing or blending the nuts.

Nuts are an important component of the Healthy Eating Pyramid 33 and peanut butter was a key component in a successful weight-loss study34. The success of this moderate-fat diet in enabling and maintaining weight loss has stimulated the development of a popular Peanut Butter Diet35 . Almonds were a major part of the vegetarian "Portfolio" diet36 which was just as effective for lowering cholesterol as the drug Lovastatin.

There is just one note of warning though. British37 and American38 surveys suggest that between one in one hundred and one in two hundred people may be allergic to one or more types of nuts. Both children and adults can be affected and the most common symptoms seem to be skin rashes and hoarseness in the throat39. For the large majority of the population though, an increase in nut consumption would appear to be desirable and "regular nut consumption can be recommended as a replacement for consumption of refined grain products or red or processed meats"10.

Film Review - Saw 4

I went to the cinema a couple of weeks ago to see the new Saw 4 film. It was a surprise to me that they produced another Saw 4 film because I thought the 3rd Saw film was the weakest of Saw films. The reviews I read were from fans of the Saw films but they followed the same theme, Saw 3 not that good Saw 4 back to form.

It was interesting to wonder what the film would be about because the 3rd film ended with Jigsaw (who is the main bad guy and chief trap maker) dying. So not only does everyone know and except the shocking tricks and traps but also the main guy was a goner. I was slightly fearful that we would be seeing another cash in prequel that haunt the cinema screens these days.

That’s enough pre waffle, lets get onto the review.

I will mention the gore of the film, it wasn’t really any worse than the other films although the dissection part was pretty full on but as they are killing people with all sorts of horrible ways its not biggy.

The film splits its time looking back in the past and the here and now. You do get an explanation of how it all started which was interesting.

The film is probably most like the first Saw film of the three films after it. The plotting of the film is a little bit hap hazard as is the overall quality of it. It has good bits and then has bits which you wonder are there really, I will say it is down to confuse the audience a bit and lead you off the scent.

I think the film is a return to form but not as good as the original (which is not unusual) and to rate it out of 10 I would give it a 7 but take into account I do like horror films and the saw films
